Voted the nation’s #1 tourism destination for restaurants, bars and nightclubs, Melbourne is overtaking Sydney as the hospitality Mecca of Australia.

New bars and restaurants are opening every week, the people of Melbourne simply must seize this opportunity to demand a more sustainable approach within the hospitality industry.  We MUST use this industry boom to really set the bar on environmental issues.

Australia (and the world) is becoming more aware of the negative impact we are making on our environment.  At Grumpy’s Green we are trying to set an example for everyone so they may be inspired to make positive differences through their own choices, such as; alternative water usage, power saving, recycling and the use of Eco-friendly products.  We want everyone to follow our lead and start doing the same!

In the last decade the people of Melbourne have been steadily moving towards ‘living green’.  We are adapting more sustainable behaviours concerning water consumption, household recycling, purchasing of energy saving appliances and by simply being aware of our own carbon footprint.  These considerations are becoming part of our everyday life  – as it should be.

Initially, we planned on opening a bar with some basic ‘Eco-Friendly’ procedures in place.  After more research and planning we asked ourselves ‘why only do the minimum?’

There are quite literally hundreds of things we can do in the hospitality industry to minimise waste, water and power usage. The fact that no other bars in Australia are committed to becoming carbon neutral was equally as alarming to us as it was inspiring.

We hope to be an inspiration to others in the hospitality industry (or any industry for that matter) by setting an example of the achievable.   We want to really turn around the attitude within our industry and other industries alike concerning sustainability and carbon impact.  Hell, we’re even using eco-friendly web-hosting!

*Over 3,564,000 litres of water per weekend by Bars & Restaurants in Melbourne - none of which is for drinking.

How it breaks down:

  • Over 2640 litres per weekend per venue;
  • One toilet averages 6 litres per flush;
  • One female toilet averages 15 flush per hour, 90 Litres per hour;
  • One male toilet averages 5 flush per hour – not including the urinal, 30 litres per hour;
  • One commercial washing basin averages 15 litres per hour;
  • Glass Washer averages 2.5 litres per cycle, 15 litres per hour;
  • Washing Machine averages 60 litres per wash. 120 litres a day.

(Figures based on 75 people per bar per weekend. 30 people per restaurant per weekend. Over a 18 hour time operating hour period. Bars range in capacity from 50 to 500 as do restaurants so, realistically, figures would more than likely be much higher. somewhere in the 10 to 15 million litres of water per weekend mark).
